How many prisons are there in Asia?
This atlas records 2,438 prisons, jails and detention centres in 47 countries of Asia. Counts depend on what each country's official registers and open map data list, so small facilities may be missing.
Which country in Asia has the most facilities in the atlas?
Japan has the most entries, with 140 prisons and jails and 13,337 police units.
How are the countries of Asia organised?
Countries are grouped by sub-region (Eastern Asia, South-Eastern Asia, Southern Asia and Central Asia). Each country page then lists its regions, and each region its districts and facilities.
Where does the information come from?
Facilities come from official government registers where they are published, and otherwise from OpenStreetMap and Wikidata, with missing contact details completed from Overture Maps. Every source is credited on the data sources page.
Can I look up a prisoner in Asia?
Prison services in Asia rarely publish inmate lists. Contact the facility or the national prison administration using the details on each facility page.
