Frequently asked
How many prisons are there in the Americas?
This atlas records 8,341 prisons, jails and detention centres in 50 countries of the Americas. Counts depend on what each country's official registers and open map data list, so small facilities may be missing.
Which country in the Americas has the most facilities in the atlas?
The United States has the most entries, with 5,978 prisons and jails and 23,253 police units.
How are the countries of the Americas organised?
Countries are grouped by sub-region (Northern America, Central America, Caribbean and South America). Each country page then lists its regions, and each region its districts and facilities.
Where does the information come from?
Facilities come from official government registers where they are published, and otherwise from OpenStreetMap and Wikidata, with missing contact details completed from Overture Maps. Every source is credited on the data sources page.
Can I check who is held in a jail in the Americas?
Only where an agency publishes its own booking roster. 355 jails in this region do, and the atlas shows those rosters live; elsewhere, contact the facility directly.
