Frequently asked

How many prisons are there in Europe?

This atlas records 3,492 prisons, jails and detention centres in 51 countries of Europe. Counts depend on what each country's official registers and open map data list, so small facilities may be missing.

Which country in Europe has the most facilities in the atlas?

Russia has the most entries, with 760 prisons and jails and 6,400 police units.

How are the countries of Europe organised?

Countries are grouped by sub-region (Western Europe, Central Europe, Northern Europe and Southern Europe). Each country page then lists its regions, and each region its districts and facilities.

Where does the information come from?

Facilities come from official government registers where they are published, and otherwise from OpenStreetMap and Wikidata, with missing contact details completed from Overture Maps. Every source is credited on the data sources page.

Can I look up a prisoner in Europe?

Prison services in Europe rarely publish inmate lists. Contact the facility or the national prison administration using the details on each facility page.
